The Novel “The Inheritance of Loss” by Kiran Desai

The book “The Inheritance of Loss” by Kiran Desai talks about an important world issue of class division and the differences between the social layers. The Soviet times are analyzed as the period when there was a race for satellite and space control between nations, which created even more division between people and social castes. The people in Moscow are portrayed as separate from the rest of the world: “Moscow was not part of the convent curriculum… Soviet shades of gray, under gray Soviet skies, all around gray Soviet people eating gray Soviet Foods… An uncontrollable sill of scarlet now in this scene, unspooling” (Desai 30).

In an article titled “The World Republic of Letters”, Christopher Prendergast talks about the historical civilization and division among people. The classes have been existent for a long time and certain people have been the outsiders without their particular consideration (Prendergast 3). The modern governing system is a complex network of political parties and the work of such parties involves moving towards the administration and order in the country. Often, there are inequalities in the rulings of the governments and social divisions.

The battle between different classes in society, democracy, human rights and the type of government are born through people having private property and the amount, as well as quality of the said attributes connected to the government and its goals. The reality shows that there are many people who possess much more than is needed for the necessities of life. This can be said about any society, as there are always people who are more successful than a large portion of the population and this is true of any nation.

There are places in the world that are considered third world but there are still people who are very wealthy and have enormous political or social status. This begs a question of how this happened and what would the results be considering the moral criteria of the greater good of the society. One of the causes of such division is the amount of opportunities that people are presented with. The conditions that exist for a certain individual become favorable in such a way that they are able to produce more gain with what they have.

This leads to a much faster development of an individual. The amount of capital that one has is a key instrument in the development of further resources. The purpose of any government is to establish order, support people of the nation and protect their rights and freedoms. Examples when this does not happen and governments abuse their authority are numerous. When this happens, people demand justice by fighting against the government and overthrowing the rulers.

One of the problems of the governmental system is that it is centralized; this leads to an inability to closely detail the issues that are the concern of localities and communities. The government should adhere to the issues of the society and the needs of majority. It is extremely difficult to analyze the necessities of people when the physical and moral location is so far away.

The working class is forced to exist down below, as they have no voice and ability to spring to power. This type of life was existent before and is still continuing. People are very much limited by their resources and ability to voice an opinion that will be heard. One of the most important aspects of any national and working class movement is the organization. The population must be educated on the current issues and unite with the common goal.
